Why did the invasion begin?
Japan was worried that China’s new leader was getting too powerful
- Japan’s army claimed chinese sabotage of railway
- Japanese military took over
What was Japan’s control like in Manchuria?
Had controlled Manchuria since 1890’s after Russo-Japanese war
- Had set up a railway for ease of trade from China to Japan
What were the League’s actions for Manchuria?
- China appealed to LoN
- September 1932 LoN produced a report stating Japan acted unlawfully
- Japanese government ordered withdrawal
- Military did not
- Manchuria was considered too far away for aid, people did not want to lose trade with japan (no sanctions imposed by LoN)
What was the outcome of the Manchuria crisis?
Japan leaves LoN 1933 (displays ineffectiveness)
- 1933, Military dictatorship was established legally
- War in Pacific begins, allies send aid to help fight
- Hitler and Mussolini know League will not stop them
