saftey margins Flashcards
when travelling down a hill, how do you control your speed?
-select breaking gear
–break gently
–(no coasting)
what is the stopping distance?
-the distance your car travels from the moment you realise you must brake (thinking distance) to the moment the vehicle stops (breaking distance)
what conditions is where the normal highway code applied?
-dry road
-good contions
what factor helos you manouver a safer stopping distance?
-leaving a two second gap between your vehicle and the one infront
what conditions changes the saftey gap between the cars on the road?
-raining/ wet road= double distance
-ICY= 10 times distance
-motorway= increase distance between vehicle
(avoid collision risk)
what should you do before starting a journey in freezing weather?
clear ice and snow from windows, lights, mirrors and number plates
what should you do when driving in freezing weather?
-use highest gear possible
-brake gently and in plenty of time
-be prepared to stop and clean snow from windscreen
what should you do when driving in fog?(4)
-allow more time for journey
-slow down as visibilitys reduced
-increase gap between vehicle and vehicle infront of you
-if visibility falls below 100m, use dipped headlights/fog lights
what is aquaplanning?
tyres lift of road surface and skate on a film of water
what should you do when aquaplanning by the tyres happens?
-ease off accelarator
-not brake until steering feels normal again
what should you do when driving through deep water?
test your brakes: by pressing lightly on the brake pedal
what does bad grip caused by hot weather cause?
affected braking
affected steering
qhat should you do when bright light is dazziling other drivers
-as indicators might be hard to see, give an arm signal instead
what should you be prepeared for when driving through high winds?
high sided vehicles, motorcyclists and cylclist blowing of from wind gust
-so prepare to give them extra room, and check your left when passing them
who is skidding caused by?
the driver
what factors increase the risk of skidding?
-wet/ icy conditions (black ice less obvious)
-cold weather
how can you reduce the risk of skidding?
-driving at low speed
- in highest gear possible
what should you do when you see road
sighns ahead?
scan road ahead for clues then
-slow down gradually before reaching a hazard(bend)
-avoid sudden steering movemants
what should you do when you start to skid?
-release footbrake and reapply gently
-steer smoothly in direction of skid
what should you do to reduce risk of skidding with an anti-lock braking systems?
-apply footbrake rapidly and firmly
-not release break pedal until stopped
(however it may not be as effective on surface water and loose road surface)
what is conpromised in the electronic stability control ? (ESC)
function of anti-lock breaking system and traction control system
-aims to prevent vehicle skidding sideways
by detecting risk of skid at early stage and provides selective break intervention to restore vehicle stability
is electronic stability control fitted in all vehicles in uk?
yea
what is a contraflow system?
-where you travel close to oncoming traffic
so:-
reduce speed
choose appropriate lane in good time
keep correct seperation distance
