SAFOLO — 2f — Respiration Flashcards
Where does respiration occur
Around and within mitochondria
Aerobic respiration (meaning, equation)
With oxygen
The chemical reaction in cells that uses oxygen to break down glucose to release energy in the form of ATP
Oxygen + Glucose -> Carbon dioxide + Water (+energy)
6O2 + C6H12O6 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is respiration
Chemical reaction that uses oxygen and glucose to produce carbon dioxide and water
Anaerobic respiration (meaning, equation)
Without oxygen
A chemical reaction in cells that breaks down glucose molecules to release energy without using oxygen
Glucose -> Lactic acid
C6H12O6 -> 2C3H6O3
Anaerobic respiration in plants and fungi
Glucose -> Ethanol + Carbon dioxide
C6H12O6 -> 2C2H5OH + CO2
When do we convert from aerobic to anaerobic?
After intense exercise, it is useful to create small amounts of energy when we cannot provide enough oxygen to our cells.
Oxygen debt?
The amount of extra oxygen needed to break down the lactic acid
ATP?
Adenosine Triphosphate
High energy molecule that functions as an immediate source of power for cell processes
