radiation
2 types of radiation:
- non-ionizing radiation
- lasers, ultraviolet light - ionizing radiation
- x-rays, gamma rays, electrmagnetic radiation
internal radiation
is called brachytherapy
when handling patients with brachytherapy:
close doors
private room
give appropriate signs
try not to stay in there for a long time
cover shoes and wear protective gears such as dosimeter
use long handled forceps and make sure lead containers are in the room
maintain greatest distance
contact precautions
gloves
gown
mask and face goggles when dealing with any secretions
for herpes zoster: if they have lesions present on the outside (disemminated) then they are both contact and airborne precautions
these are contact precautions: MRSA VRE ESBLs Klebsiella C. diff notavirus rotavirus scabies impetigo lice RSV parainfluenza conjunctivities wound infections with execssive drainage or staph herpes simplex chickenpox shingles skin diphtheria
droplet precautions
surgical mask
based on the type of care you are doing: gloves, gown, face shield
keep a distance of 3 ft or more
patients door doesn’t need to be closed
when patient comes out, they need to wear surgical mask
no special ventilation is required
these are droplet precautions: pharyngeal diphtheria epiglottitis flu pneumonia pneumonic plague streptococcal pharyngitis adenovirus rhinovirua parovirus B19 scarlet fever rubella pertussis mumps mycoplasma pneumonia meningitis sepsis
airborne precautions
N95 mask if you are in the room with them
closed doors at all times
there will be about 6-12 air changes in an hour to decrease infections
if patient leaves room, then they need to wear surgical mask
these are airborne precautions: varicella - chickenpox herpes zoster - shingles measles tuberculosis
triage immediate
chest wounds
2-3 degree burns
shock
open fracture
triage delayed
stable abdominal wound
eye and CNS injuries
triage minimal
minor burns
minor fractures
minor bleeding
triage expectant
unresponsive
spinal cord injury
expectant is where you know that even with treatment they will not make it
client identifies
clients room number should never be used as an identifier
instead:
name
date of birth
medical record number
