what is safeguarding?
the measure taken to pretect peopl’e’s heath wellbeing ad rights, enabling them to be kept safe from harm, abuse and neglect. Practioners in health, social care and child care environments must all be aware of the need for safeguarding
what is the need for safegurading?
safeguarding for adults
- to ensure right to live free from abuse and neglect are protected and that working in partner
safeguarding for children
- to protect child from maltreatment
-preventing impairing of children’s health and development.
- ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.
- talking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.
Safeguarding for children involves :
- Protecting children from maltreatment e.g. physical, emotional, psychological abuse
- preventing impairment of children’s health and development - physical , health and well being, education
- ensuring that children grow up in a stable home with the provision of safe and effective care.
- taking action to enable all children to have the best outcome- provision of support for the family ; fostering or adoption
safeguarding issues in adult care environment :
- administering of medication - incorrect late or inappropriate medication
- pressure sores - those who are frail or who have restricted mobility are at risk of developing sores on their bodies that receive the most pressure.
- Falls - residents not assessed on their risk of falls, walking aids not provided .
- rough treatment - being rushed or shouted out.
- Poor Nutritional care - appropriate food provided with swallowing difficulties or chewing or those with dietary, religious needs so they will end up being malnutrition.
lack of social inclusion - no stimulation , activity or opportunity for social interaction.
Control of substances Hazardous to health 2002
it requires employers to either prevent or reduce their workers exposure to substances that are hazardous to their health . they must protect staff and services users from harm by ensuring that potentially dangerous substances are properly trained to do so.
COSHH
covers the storage, labelling and disposal of hazardous substances
- they must be a COSHH file listing all of the hazardous substances in the workplace.
- the COSHH file must be kept up to date.
- chemicals and medication must be kept in their original containers.
- substances must be secured stored in a safe place.
- containers must have an appropriate safety cap or lid.
The COSHH file should:
- identify and the name the hazardous substance
- state where the hazardous substances are kept.
- identify what the hazardous labels on the container mean.
- describe the effect of the substances
- state the maximum amount of time it is safe to be exposed to them.
- describe how to deal with an emergency involving the hazardous substances
Institutionalised care
Institutional abuse occurs where the routine , systems and regions of an institution result in poor or inadequate standards of care and poor practice which affects the whole settings and denies , restricts or curtails the dignity , privacy and choice independence or fulfilment of adults at risk . for example , people being forced to eat or go to sleep.
financial abuse - e.g. theft of personal money or possessions , staff inappropriately accepting gifts.
