- leadership and the setting of standards by management
- trained employees
- a trusting and supportive environment
- understanding of the risks specific to a particular workplace.
Reasons for risk assessment
- it is a legal requirenment under the health and safety at Work act. The written record provides evidence that the risk assssment has been carried out.
- staff, services sers and vistors have a right to be protected and kept safe from harm.
- Assessment checks could cause harm to people using the care settings.
- Assessment prevent accidents, illness and dangers.
- Staff, services users and vistors will feel confident using the service knowing the risk assessments are carried out
The purpose of a Risk Assessment
- to check the equipment is safe and fit for purpose
- to ensure that the care setting building itself is safe.
- to identify ways of controlling and minimising risks.
- to Ensure any planned trips or visit are safe to proceed.
carrying put risk Assessments involve five steps:
1 looking for hazards associated with the activity.
2 identify who might be harmed and how.
3 Consider the level of risk - decided on the precaution or control measures needed to reduce the risk
4 make a written record of the findings
5 Review the risk assessments regularly and improve precautions or control measures.
Fire Safety
every care setting is reuired to have a fire emergency evacuation plan.
why would fire evacuations be different between hospitals or nursing home to those of residential home or infant school?
Due to some individuals requiring more support others - for example those with poor mobility who may use a wheelchair, and others who may have conditions like deafness. these individuals may not realise what is plans (PEEPs) are in place. children will have to be reassured, kept calm and supervised.
Fire Evacuation procedure …
if you discover a fire:
- raise alarm , activate alarm system, call 999
- All staff remove people from the area - direct them to the fire assembly point, use designated fire exists, never use lifts
- Designated staff assist residents with: wheelchair uses, hearing difficulties, dementia patients.

- prepare a plan for how to manage these risks
- put the plan into action, manage these risks
- provide the information to anyone who might work on or disturb the asbestos.
transport
