7 Basis of Discrimination

definitions of basis of discrimination.
Race; the ethnic group that an individual belongs to. e.g. black.
culture: A group of poeple sharing the same ideas ideas, customs, language etc.
social class: someone economic or educational status where grouped into social categories e.g. middle class
age: the length of time that a person has lived
Gender : male , female, transgender
Sexual orientation : gay, straight
Religion: A system of beliefs and values e.g. Christianity , Judaism, Islam.
Definition of Discrimination
is the unjust and unfair treatment of an individual based on their differences.
Types of Discriminatory Practices:
Abuse Direct Indirect Prejudice Labelling Bullying covert abuse of power overt abuse of power.
what is abuse ( type of discriminatory practises)
Negative and harmful way of behaving towards another individual E.g. physical , emotional.
direct discrimination definition
This involves intentionally pulling someone at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on their differences.
what is indirect discrimination?
when a policy , practice or rule applies to everybody but has a disadvantage some people or particular group.
what is prejudice? ( discriminatory practice)
this is a negative attitude or dislike of an individual or group based on ill- informed personal opinion.
what is labelling/ ( discriminatory practice)
Negative approach that identifies people as members of a particular group with an assumption that there are all the same.,e.g. goth.
bullying ( discriminatory practice)
involving threatening, intimidating, humiliating or frightening others continuously intend to physically hurt. e.g. beating someone up every day.
covert abuse of power
when an individual uses a hidden power to discriminate against someone, it is secretive and discrete.
overt abuse of power
an individual openly uses power to discriminate against people.
Impacts of discrimination include…
marginalisation empowerment low self-esteem and self confidence loss of self identity unfair treatment mental health poor health and well being
Definition of marginalisation
Being pushed to the edge of society, being made to feel different e.g transgender being pushed away in a friend group.
definition disempowerment
Feels/having a lack of control of your life. Feeling empowerment , disengage with life. Losing independence e.g having a abusive family.
