Rural Flashcards
What human factors affect farming
Market, Building machinery labour, Farm size, Government policies and EU substiles
What are the different types of farming
Arable, Hill sheep, dairy, mixed, intensive, market
What physical factors affect farming
Rain, Temperature, Soil, Slope
Describe arable farming
Flat land for large machinery used. Sunshine to ripen crops. Rainfall enough for crops to grow. Temperature above 6 degrees during growing season. Fertile soil to allow crops to grow
Describe hill sheep farming
Steep land ~ sheep are sure footed. Infertile soils because sheep can eat rough grass. Low temperatures as sheep have woolly coats for insulation. Remote upland areas ~ sheep don’t need much care and attention
Describe dairy farming
Near to the farmhouse. Flat land because cows can’t cope with steep land. Fertile soil as good soil for grazing is necessary. Rainfall is necessary for grass to grow. Near to market because milk can go off quickly
Describe mixed farming
Both crops and animals. Some crops are sold for profit and other crops used to feed animals.
Describe market gardening
Fruits, flowers and veg. Small size and requires seasonal workers. Greenhouses, sprinklers and fertilisers used. Farm close to market as food goes off quickly.
Describe intensive farming
Have a lot of impacts used on a small area of land
Describe features of a rice farm
Terraced land to maximise yield. Fish added to water to add protein. Bunds to flood paddyfields and keep water in. Buffalo used to plough land rather than heavy machinary.
