Example of a continous monitoring method

A

Add 6cm magnesium ribbon to flask contain HCl place a bung in top and start timer
Note down vol of hydrogen gas collected every 15 secs for 2.5 mins
Repeat for diff HCl concs

Some issues with gas volume measuring

A

Some gas may escape before bung is added
Magnesium strips may be of different mass and surface area, will affect rate

How to prevent gas escaping

A

Place solid reactant upright in tube in flask, tip the tube over by moving the conical flask around to start reaction
