routes to sporting excellence Flashcards
how does someone become elite?
foundation –> participation –> performance –> excellence (pyramid)
foundation:
- intro to a sport (1st attempt)
participation:
- recreational involvement, choose to participate, emphasis on fun
performance:
- county + regional participation w/ emphasis on competition + winning
excellence:
- national or international level w/ high levels of coaching + sport science support
development pathway applied to netball
Foundation:
- take part in netball in lessons, get introduced to sport in PE curriculum - y7
Participation:
- get involved in extracurricular clubs, enjoying it, play outside of school for club/ team, school team = purely for fun
Performance:
- try out play netball at county and regional level = playing competitively and winning
Excellence:
- playing internationally/ nationally with sport science support + national coaches
roles of schools in sporting excellence
- compulsory PE = inclusive
- learn a range of sports
- learn fundamental skills = transferrable
- coaching + facility quality varies
- extra-curricular competitive opportunities (intra = house comps, sports days) (inter = fixtures against other schools)
- provide links to local clubs
- offers qualifications (GCSE, A-Level PE, sports leader awards)
role of clubs in sporting excellence
- competition is frequent
- specialist coaching
- specialist facilities + equipment
- some clubs provide concessions e.g. help w/ match fees, gym memberships etc..
- possibility for talent identification/ scouts
- can provide basic medical support
role of universities in sporting excellence
- combines performance w/ study
- many offer sporting scholarships/ bursaries
- high quality competition (National Level)
- specialist facilities (sometimes centres of excellence)
- involved in sports science research
Talent ID
The ID of potential elite performers in sport has been formalised + organised by UK sport
develops athletes by:
- identifying potential talent in sport
- supporting an athlete’s lifestyle
- supporting the athlete’s coaching
- supporting through research, sports science = sports medicine, via the English Institute of Sport
- Providing a ‘World class Programme’ or pathway to success
what are the two distinct levels that the world class programme operates at?
1: podium
2: podium potential
World Class Programme
operates at 2 distinct levels:
1: podium
supporting athletes w/ realistic medal-winning capabilities at the next Olympic/ Paralympic Games (max of 4 years away from the podium)
2: podium potential
supporting athletes who’s performances suggest they have realistic medal-winning capabilities at the subsequent Olympic + Paralympic Games (max of 8 years away from the podium)
what are the 3 phases of the World Class Programme?
Phase 1:
- physical + skills based test e.g. endurance + strength tests
Phase 2-3:
- further assessment, physical, medical, psychological screenings etc.. = athlete’s suitability for elite + sport
Confirmation phase:
- 6-12 months training for selected athletes
- continuously assessed o judge suitability
- unsuccessful athletes given opportunity to continue sport through club system
key factors for successful talent identification
- widespread testing
- e.g. all genders, socio-economic groups
- high quality systems
- e.g. top quality scouts, coaches + testing methods
- variety of testing
- e.g. physiological + psychological
- good competition systems to scout from
pros of Talent ID system
- those identified should make rapid progress
- leads to more success/ medal winners
- widens talent pool in minority sports
- better use of NGB funding once selected
cons of Talent ID system
- although they have the potential to be good, doesn’t mean they always are
- experiences coaches ‘eye’ could be better than quantitative tests in some sport
- system will always miss some people
- testing requires extensive funding
development programme to find + develop potential elite performers
- train coaches
- develop facilities
- financial support for potential performers
- talent ID
- screening for desirable physio + psych attributes
- develop physio sports science support
- develop psych sports science support
- create campaigns to promote the sport
- train officials at all levels
- create competition structure
the role of UK sport
- invest National Lottery funds from the government + distribute via NGB’s
= maximise the performance of UK athletes in the Olympics/Paralympics - funding for athletes directly through the Athlete Performance Award (APA)
= contributes to living + sporting costs - central funding for NGB’s to operate World Class Prog + training + support for world-standard comps
the role of National Institutes (EIS)
- provides sports science + technological help = biomechanics
- provides medical staff: physiotherapy, strength + conditioning,
- nutrition = develop tailored plans to max
- psychology = athlete’s psych health + develop cog techniques
- access to top-class facilities e.g. heat chambers
= e.g. performance centres + training bases - technology equipment that is used to test, train + support athletes + coaches
- advice on performance lifestyle
- coaching
- facilities
- medicine + rehab
- performance analysis/ biomechanics
= review performance
