- increase participation due to role models created
- increased success for the host city (home advantage)
- helps develop excellence in sport through improved structure/ pathways

A
- wasted facilities after the event - white elephants
- disproportionate funding - minority sports can suffer
- if unsuccessfully hosted, can have a negative effect on the profile of the sport
- too much pressure on athletes to succeed
- any deviance/ scandals will have a negative effect on the country + sport
= more likely to be highlighted - decline in participation after the event (temporary effect)

- brings people together + sense of purpose
- develops patriotism
- nation can become more active + healthier
- people enjoy the experience = appeasement
- mood improves + quality of life increases
- money through tourism

- positive effects may be short-lived + leave other problems behind
- mood of the host nation can be negatively affected by poor performances
- people may be displaced/ disrupted by the development required
- human rights are sometimes ignored in favour of building + funding the event = protests
- the benefits may not be relevant or felt by the majority of local people

- many jobs created are temporary
- if events/ parts are linked to failure or deviant behaviour
= sponsors can be negatively affected - bidding for event is expensive
= if its not won, then no money coming back in

- if legacy of event is poor e.g. not using facilities much, part rates low etc..
- could reflect badly as money poorly spent
- negative environmental impacts e.g. litter can decrease popularity
