ROTIFERA Flashcards
Why are Rotifers considered to be pseudocoelomates?
coelom is remnant of blastocoel and not completely surrounded by mesoderm.
Synapomorphy of rotifers?
A corona with ciliated rings
Complete or incomplete gut?
Complete gut
What do the toes do?
Have pedal glands for adhesion
How do Rotifers support themselves?
Cuticle provides support.
Pseudocoelom acts as a hydrostatic skeleton
How do Rotifers move?
They swim using coronal cilia
Creep by attaching foot and elongating body to extend forward
Bands of muscles
Explain the Nervous System and Sensory Receptors
Cerebral ganglia and longitudinal nerve cords.
Corona has tactile bristles, chemoreceptors, one ocellus, and antennae.
How do rotifers feed themselves?
Filter feeding or raptorial
How do they accomplish circulation?
Pseudocoelom acts as a medium for circulation
How do they osmoregulate?
Protonephridia with flame bulbs.
Nephridioduct leads to bladder which empties in cloaca.
How do rotifers reproduce?
Females mitotically produce diploid ova (amictic ova) which develop without fertilization into females
What is the cycle of reproduction where males are present?
The Autumn Cycle
What type of cleavage?
Spiral, holoblastic
What type of eggs?
Isolecithal
Stereoblastula and gastrulation by ______?
Epiboly
