Rotenone Flashcards
What is rotenone?
Rotenoid plant extract
Odorless and COLORLESS crystalline ketonic chemical
Give a few qualities about the metabolism and exposure of rotenone.
Readily degraded upon exposure to warm air and light
More lipophilic than hydrophilic
Inhalation is more toxic
Metabolized in liver - excreted in urine and feces within 24 hrs
What species is rotenone most neurotoxic to?
Fish and Arthropods
What is the MOA of rotenone?
Blocks oxidative phosphorylation in the TCA cycle
What are some of the clinical signs of rotenone?
DEPRESSION AND CONVULSIONS are the predominate CS+ with a neurotoxin
Conjunctivitis, muscle tremors, lethargy, respiratory stimulation followed by depression, liver changes, pulmonary irritation, and asphyxia, GI tract irritant
What are some abnormalities found in the labs?
Antemortem- hypoglycemia, liver enzyme changes, hypoxemia/hypercapnea
How do you diagnose rotenone toxicosis?
Based on Hx and documentation of exposure
What is the treatment?
No specific treatment
What is the prognosis?
Good for birds and mammals
Fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects- poor prognosis
