Neonicotinoids Flashcards
What is the most widely used insecticides in the world?
Imidacloprid (Neonicotinoid)
-25% of all insecticide use
What is the MOA of neonicotinoids?
Bind to nicotinic receptors for the NT Ach in the insect CNS
What are some of the properties of neonicotinoids?
Water soluble
Degrades slowly in environment
Degraded by direct light (half-life approx 34 days)
CHARGED NITROGEN METABOLITES (TOXIC TO NON-TARGETED SPECIES)
What are some of the toxicokinetics of neonicotinoids?
Poorly absorbed
Metabolized in liver
Excreted in bile and urine
What is the MOA of neonicotinoids?
Neonicotinoids bind acheylcholinesterase - BINDING IS IRREVERSIBLE (OP!)
Neonicotinoids are acetylcholine receptor agonists- binds to nicotinic receptors
What species have relatively low toxicity to neonicotinoids?
Mammals and birds
Cannot cross the BBB in mammals, but can in insects
What are the clinical sings for neonicotinoids?
Similar to that for nicotine toxicity
