DEET Flashcards
What is DEET?
N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET)
Common insect repelled
May be combined with other insecticides in pet products
Ex: 9% DEET and 0.09% fenvalerate a pyrethroid
True or False. DEET is colorless.
True
DEET is lipophilic but relatively sensitive to what?
Light
What is the mode of action?
Mosquito attraction to a host is thought to involve long and short range stimuli (visual, olfactory)
Lactic acid on skin may be an essential olfactory stimulant
Effectiveness may be due to its ability to mask sensory perception
Who is susceptible to the toxicity of DEET?
Dogs and cats, cats more sensitive
Slightly toxic to fish
DEET is designed for human use, not recommended for pets!
How is DEET associated with other products?
DEET can increase dermal absorption of other products (fenvalerate-pyrethroid) EFFECTIVENESS!
What are some of the toxicokinetics?
Metabolized in liver and excreted in urine
GI tract absorption
Dermal absorption
What is the MOA of DEET?
Undetermined!
What are the clinical signs in dogs and cats?
Hypersalivation, vomiting, hyperexcitability, tremors, ataxia, seizures, skin, and mucous membrane irritations
What the diagnosis?
History, presentation, +/- chem analysis
What is the treatment?
No specific antidote
Activated charcoal may be given, but avoid magnesium cathartics as this may cause CNS depression
What is the prognosis?
Good if subleathal exposure, responded in 24-72 hours
