rosenhan Flashcards
what is rosenhan in terms of studies
classic studie
what was the aim of rosenhans study
to investigate if sane people can be distinguished form insane people using the DSM2.
to test if the DSM2 is a valid diagnostic tool
what where the pp called
psuedo-paitents
how many psuedo paitents where there
8
what happened to psuedo paitents
sent to 12 different hospitals across east and west
where did the study occour
america
what did the psuedo paitents give to phsyciatrist to protect their identity
false names and occupations
what was the first stage in the procedure
interview with psychiatrists
what did psuedo paitetns tell psychiatrists
that they could hear same sex voices saying empty, hollow and thud
after psuedo paitents met with psychiatrist what happened
they where addmited to a psychiatric facility
what did psuedo patents do once admitted to psychiatric facility
they behaved normally reporting they were free of symptoms.
took part in ward activities
reported on their experiences covertly at first but then overtly
when given pills they flushed them down the toilet
how did psuedo paitents take notes
covertly at first but then overtly
what where rosenhans findings
rosenhan found that 30% of real paitents noteced that psuedo paitents where behaving normally and where sane. saw that other paitents had also flushed away their pills.
psuedo paitents where diagnosed with additional things such as oral aquisition syndrome as they would queue early outside the canteen for lunch due to bordom.
what did psuedo paitents find out about the staff at the facility
71% of psychiatrists and 88% of nurses ignored questions asked by the psuedo paitents
average therapist paitent contact was 11.3 mins a day
what was the percent of nurses who ignored the psuedo paitents
88%
what was the percent of psychiatrists who ignored the psuedo paitents
71%
what was the average therapist-paitent contact a day
11.3 mins
what did rosenhan conclude
staff where unable to distinguish between those who where sane and insane.
bhehaviours where interpreted via the expectations expacted from diagnosis
what is a strength of rosenhans study
ecological validity
how is ecological validity a strenght of rosenhan
one strength of rosenhans reasearch is it’s ecological validity. as the study was a feild experiment and was conducted in real psychiatric facility with real nurses and psychiatrists, as well as other insane paitents the findings in the ability to distinguish between sane and insane behaviour is represenative of real life psychiatrifacilites and behaviour
how can ecological validity support rosen han
t/f the study has ecological validity as the setting of a psychiatric ward is representaive of real live wards and so behaviour from staff i representalive of real life behaviour thus increasing the validity.
what is a weakness of rosenhan
construct validity
how does rosenhan lack constrcut validity
rosenhan found that 7/8 psuedo paitents where diagnosed with schizphrenia after reporting hearing same sex voices saying hollow echo and thud
how does this allow is to lack construct validity
t/f the symptoms listed in the DSM 2 aren’t representaive enough to make a correct diagnosis as they lack construct validity
what is anouther weakness of rosenhans study
it’s ethnocentric
how is rosenhans study ethnocentric
rosenhan used a small sample size of 12 psuedo paitents who where all from america and 11 of where admitted to american pschyiatric facilites
what does it being an ethnocentric sample mean
t/f this is an ethnocentric sample an the findings of the validity and diagnosis of the dsm2 and the distinguishment between sane and insane isn’t representative of a wider population due to the small sample size and so is ungeneralisable
what is a strenght of rosenhan
standerdised procedure
how does rosenhan have a standersised procedure
all psuedo paitents where instructed to s
list the same symptoms of saying they heard voices sying hollow, thud, and empty. all paitents where diagnosed using dsm 2. all paitents who where admitted where given the smae medication and same ammount that they disposed off
how does this standerdised prcedure support rosenhans study
t/f cause and effect can easily be established meaning the study is reliable and can be replicated to produce consistant findings
outline how rosenhans data is seen as primary data (2)
rosenhans data can be seen as primary data as it was collected first hand by both rosenhan and the psuedo paitents on the abuse from staff and nurses in the psychiatric facility. he then wrote the behaviour of nurses and psychiatrsists down to then analyse later
