An alphabet agency that aimed to increase the amount of public work

What were the aims of the First New Deal
- To save Capitalism
- Industrial recovery
- Create jobs and stimulate the economy
What was FERA
Federal Emergency Relief Authority
Allocated $500,000,000 to help those in need
What did FERA do
- Set up the CWA during the winter of 1933-34
- Helped build thousands of roads and public buildings and helped many adults learn to read
What was the CCC
- Civilian Conservation Corps
- Programme was set up by the military and offered work to 18-25 year olds for 6 months to 2 years
What did the CCC do
- Took 250,000 people off of the unemployment list
- Built 125,000 roads, 46,000 bridges and planted 3 billion trees
- Lasted until 1942 and employed 3 million men
What did the NRA do
- Issued a code of practices to each industry and tried to encourage fair competition
- Banned child labour for those under 16
- Given $3.3 billion to invest in companies who took up the practices
- Many codes proved to be impractical and impossible to enforce
What was the PWA
- Second half of the NRA for industrial recovery
- Gave $3.3 billion to spend on roads, schools, dams and hospitals
What did the PWA do
- 13,000 schools built along 50,000 miles of road
- Millions of dollars pumped into the American Economy
- Ickes was obsessively tightfisted and spent only $110 million of the $3.3 billion allocated
What was the CWA
-Created in November 1933 using $400 million grant from the PWA
What did the CWA do
- Built or improved 500,000 miles of roads, 40,000 schools and over 3,500 playgrounds
- Employed 50,000 teachers
- Put $700 million dollars into general circulation
- CWA was closed in March 1934
