What were the general effects of WW1 on social class

A
  • Small decline in deference (704,803 men died in WW! which shook confidence in the upper class generals)
  • Death toll disproportionately affected the upper class
  • ROPA and “Land fit for heroes” showed a commitment to equality (Even during depression prices fell faster than wages)

-Many wanted a more egalitarian society, inspired by the 1942 Beveridge report and the hardships of the 30’s

Why was there a decline in deference across 1951-1979

A
  • End to rationing in 1954 and hire purchase act led to increased consumerism
  • Satire boom where many people began to joke around the ruling classes (Shows like Beyond the Fringe)
  • Sex Scandals such as the profumo scandal showed that the ruling classes were not these holier than thou beings but normal people

Sexual Offences Act 1967 - decriminalised homosexuality
Abortion Act 1967 - Legalised abortion
Divorce reform Act 1969 - Made it easier to divorce with the addition of the “irretrievable breakdown” clause
Race relation acts - Banned incitement of racial hatred and the colour bar
