Roman Art Flashcards
What is the difference between greek and roman art?
Greek art was idealised while roman art is very realistic
Talk about the Bronze Equestrian statue of marcus Aurelius:
- Romans had greater concern for the individual
- Bronze
- realism
- showing heroism and authority
- Monumental size and power of horse
- Dominant pose
- horse to man is not accurate proportion
What were the contributions the romans made to architecture?
- Concrete
- Arches
- Barrel vaults & groin vaults
- Dome
How did the romans make concrete better then the Greeks?
The concrete was made with volcanic dust making it extremely strong and could span longer distances. It made it cheaper and faster to build with
Why was the arch such an improvement compared to the post and lintel system?
The arch makes the weight more evenly distributed making it stronger.
What was the barrel vault?
The barrel vault was arches lined up behind another making a long passageway
What difference did the Groin vault make?
With the arches intersecting it made a wide open space in the middle
What was the dome?
The dome was arches intersecting each other around a central axis making height and space greater
Talk about the Pantheon:
The outside shows the Greeks post and lintel system with corinthian columns and the roman dome behind. The floor is convex for water to drain out and coffering (square pattern) in the ceiling with cut outs to reduce weight.
