What did the egyption believe in?
The Egyptians believed in life after death and in many different gods. And they were obsessed with order and permanence
What was the egyption spirit that lived inside them?
the ‘Ka’
Why did Egyptian mummify the person?
They believed the “ka” lived inside them even after death and they needed to preserve the body.
What was the development of the tomb?
Sarcophagus, Mastaba, Step pyramid, Pyramid
What was the Sarcophagus?
It was where the mummies were placed in a shallow grave in rock tombs and buried with food, jewels, pots etc. but they were often stolen from and not permanent structures.
What was the mastaba?
was the beginning of the tomb structure and the corpse was buried deeper with airshaft’s. and a chapel
What was the step pyramid?
Was mastaba’s placed on top of the other built of limestone, sandstone and granite.
What is the pyramid?
It culminating in an apex at the top and functioned as a link between pharaoh and gods and stood as a symbol of power and strength.
What are the characteristics of Egyption sculpture?
They were monumental in size, stiff and rigid with no movement. They have severe frontality and no detail at the back. They are stylized with knees together and clenched fistch resting on the knees.
What is schematic in art terms?
a design representation of the elements of a system using abstract, graphic symbols rather than realistic pictures.
What are characteristics of Egyption Paintings?
They are schematic and stylized and size signifies importance. The scenes were orders in parallel lines to separate and ground lines for the figures.
What is the meaning and characteristics of the painting of Nebamun hunting in the marshes?
The figures are stylized but the birds are realistic. Nebamun is much bigger than his kid and wife showing importance. All the figures are on one line with no depth. The marshes were seen as a symbol of rebirth and sexuality and the scene refers to the triumph of life and death.
