Rom - Lesson 17 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the ultimate reason and proximate (human) reason that non-spiritual ethnic Israel was not converted?

A

They were zealous to be righteous, but unfortunately pursued righteousness “not by faith but as [if one could attain] by works” (Rom 9:32)

Q

According to Dr. Cara, how is “Christ the end of the law” in Rom 10:4?

A
  • There are many options of how to take it. Dr. Cara’s view sees a strong connection between Rom 10:3 and 10:6
  • Christ is the temporal end of the law to establish one’s own righteousness for those who believe. Hence, it is not a R-H statement but is rather existential

Q

According to Dr. Cara, how can both a righteousness by faith and a righteousness by works be in the OT? Relate this to Romans 10.

A

2nd use of the Law: It taught it as part of the “mirror” part of the law. To give the requirement and point you to Christ because you don’t meet it.

  • The word law is used in a twofold sense. At times it means the whole of doctrine taught by Moses, and at times that part of it which belonged peculiarly to his ministry, and is contained in its precepts, rewards and punishments” (Calvin, Romans and Thessalonians, 222-23)
  • In a limited sense, the OT teaches a righteousness by works option
  • If a fuller and complete sense, the OT teaches righteousness by faith (consistent with a Reformed bi-covenantal view)

Q

Romans 10:3 is one of the clearest statements in Paul (along with Phil 3:9) on the absolute dichotomy between the righteousness of God and the righteousness of man (memorize it)

A
  • Rom 10:3 - For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.
  • Phil 3:9 - and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith
