Lesson 10 Flashcards

1
Q

Respond to Childs’ quote concerning Paul being a “theological composite” in Acts 20

A

This seems to be implying that it is not really Paul who is speaking but Luke speaking and crediting Paul. Thus the terms “gathered, universalized, and made representative.”

If this speach is not really from Paul, that would seem to make Luke a desciever (minimumly) and would put into question all that Luke has written.

Q

Give Dr. Cara’s rationale as to why it is not historically unusual that Paul’s Acts 20 speech is different than his Acts 13 speech.

A

A large part of the differences are explained by the audience to which Paul is speaking.

Q

According to Ladd, what is the relationship between the “tongues of fire” in Acts 2:3 and “[Jesus] will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” in Matt 3:11?

A

the baptisrn with fire is the eschatological baptism of judgment, as the context in the Gospels proves. The chaff is to be bumed with unquenchable fire (Mt. 3:12).

Furthermore, the pentecostal phenomenon was not tongues of fire, but tongues like fire, and is no doubt designed to suggest a wonderful theophany, somewhat analogous to Moses’ experience at the burning bush
