Rom - Lesson 11 Flashcards
According to Dr. Cara, what part did Tertius play in the authorship of Romans?
He copied word for word as proved by no noticeable difference at the grammar level between Romans and other Pauline Epistles (e.g., 1 Corinthians, Galatians), in which epistles no amanuensis is named
Concerning Romans 5, give one argument why it should be connected to the Justification Section one reason why it should be connected with the Sanctification Section.
Chapter 5 is a transitional chapter.
Justification - Paul is arguing for a justification by faith argument by experience.
Santificaiton - Rom 5:1-5 seems to focus more on sanctification
* peace with God
* boast in the hope of the glory of God
* Glory in our siffering
Does Dr. Cara consider Rom 1:18-11:36 a pristine summary of Paul’s theology which was independent of the Sitz-im-Leben of Rome or Paul? Give a nuanced answer.
YES - Hence, he writes a well thought- out summary which realizes they have a basic foundation of Christian knowledge and that there are both Jews and Gentiles at Rome
At a minimum, one needs to say that Paul’s total doctrine is not included in Romans (e.g., no church theology, no parousia, no eucharist).
Paul wants to better introduce himself and his theology to the Romans in order to enhance his upcoming visit
Hence, he writes a well thought- out summary which realizes they have a basic foundation of Christian knowledge and that there are both Jews and Gentiles at Rome
Any allusions to problems are “generic” situations applicable to any church in Gentile lands

According to Waters, explain how the Roman church was started by Jewish Christians, but by the time of the writing of Romans, Gentile Christians were dominant.

Give Water’ three purposes for Paul’s writing Romans.
- To provide a peronal and theological intrudction to himself to the church at Rome.
- He is focusing on Rome as an unreached people group because he had recently fulfilled the minitry of the gospel of Christ in Mediterranean (Rom 15:19)
- To address and resolve a pastoral problem that had arisen within the Roman Church. (Rom 14:1 - 15:13) (The Strong and the Weak concerning observing certain requirements of the Mosaic law)
Reading Questions – Kruger, BTINT, chapter 6, “Romans”

b. Davidic descendant and therefore David’s son
c. Chist’s human existence between his incarnation and resurrection as “According to the flesh.”

ii. Spirit his imperishableness and glory
Exaltation
a. Chist’s resurrection as the point of transition from weakness to glory
b. Jesus was raised from the dead by the Holy Spirit
c. and declared to be the Son of God in power
d. this is also shared and bestows up his people for our salvation.
He shares them with us by his Spirit (The Spirit of Christ (8-9)
Reading Questions – Kruger, BTINT, chapter 6, “Romans”
Waters sees Romans 7:14-25 as Paul’s speaking of himself as a believer. Briefly give his three arguments for this view.
- Paul uses past tense in 7:7-13. Now, in 7:14-25, he consistently uses the present tense.
- Paul refers to what he calls his”inner being” (7:22), something that he elsewhere predicates only of the believer (Eph 3:16).
- Paul declares a conent to Rom 7:16, delight in &:22, and service of 7:25a the law of God that he later affirms is categorically impossible for the unbeliever (8:7)
