Q

Insulation.

A

Fats are slow conductors of heat and so are often stored beneath the body surface in endothermic animals which help to retain body heat.

Cell membranes

A

Phospholipids are important in cell membranes, contributing to their flexibility and the transfer of lipid soluble substances across them.

Q

Waterproofing

A
  • waxy cuticles conserve water for terrestrial org.
  • hydrophobic FA repel water so lipids are efficient at preventing water loss
  • when oxidised, they provide more water than oxi.

A

Less dense than water. Aquatic birds and insects use oil droplets to aid buoyancy.
