Roles of lipids Flashcards
1
Q
What are the functions of lipids?
A
An energy source, insulation, protection, waterproofing, buoyancy and cell membranes.
2
Q
Insulation.
A
Fats are slow conductors of heat and so are often stored beneath the body surface in endothermic animals which help to retain body heat.
3
Q
Cell membranes
A
Phospholipids are important in cell membranes, contributing to their flexibility and the transfer of lipid soluble substances across them.
4
Q
Waterproofing
A
- waxy cuticles conserve water for terrestrial org.
- hydrophobic FA repel water so lipids are efficient at preventing water loss
- when oxidised, they provide more water than oxi.
5
Q
Buoyancy
A
Less dense than water. Aquatic birds and insects use oil droplets to aid buoyancy.
