Biological Molecules Flashcards
1
Q
What is the main functions of polysaccharides?
A
- Storage purposes
- Structural function
2
Q
Starch is a mixture of 2 substances which are?
A
Amylose & Amylopectin
3
Q
Why is starch suitable for storage?
A
- insoluble, cannot dissolve, no influentic influence
- does not diffuse out of the cell
- compact (can store a lot of things in small space)
- hydrolisis of starch, alpha-glucose, easy to transport
4
Q
What is cellulose made of?
A
Monomers of beta-glucose
5
Q
Explain the function of cellulose.
A
- it has straight unbranched chain
- the branch is parallel to one another allowing h-bond between them which form the cross linkages
- adding to enstability and making it a valuable structural material
- the chains can be bundle up together in a groups of up to 2000 to form a microfibril.
6
Q
What are the uses of cellulose to man?
A
- make paper
- cotton and rayon
- uses in fabric are largely cellulose
- cellophane used in packaging
- celluloid used in photographic film
7
Q
What are lipids?
A
Varied & diverse group of substances
8
Q
Name the main groups of lipids.
A
Triglyceride (Fats & Oils) phospholipid & waxes
9
Q
Characteristic shared by lipids
A
- C, H, O (elements)
- proportions of O is smaller than in carbohydrate
- insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents eg. alcohol
10
Q
What is the monomers of lipids?
A
Fatty acids
