Amino Acids & Polypeptides Flashcards
What are amino acids?
Monomers that made up proteins. 20 are found naturally in proteins.
What is a buffer solution?
solution that can resist the tendency to alter their pH
How is buffer solution important?
To keep the pH stable which is necessary for enzyme functioning
Resulting bond from 2 amino acids is known as …
peptide bonds
What is polymerisation?
process whereby through a series of condensation energy many amino acids monomers can be join together to form a polymer resulting change is called a polypeptide
What is the 3D shape called?
alpha-helix or a folded sheet know as beta pleated sheet.
What are the 4 structures of proteins?
Primary structure, secondary structure, tertiary structure and quaternary structure.
The sequence in primary structure determines its properties and shape. Why?
The sequence of amino acids sets the pattern for additional bonding such as H-bonding between the amino acids and therefore how the chain is folded.
Types of bonds that can be found in a polypeptide chain.
Disulphide bridges, ionic bond, h-bond, hydrophobic interactions between electrons groups of non-polar molecule
How is the polypeptide chain structure like?
Most often they are bend/fold to an alpha helix (form of of spiral spring) eg. protein keratin.
