Role of liver Flashcards
what is the hepatic portal vein
the vein that transports blood directly from stomach and villi of small intestine to the liver
what is the hepatic portal system
all the blood that flows from digestive organs to liver and from the liver to the hearth
where does the liver receive digested food from?
it receives all digested food absorbed by villi in the small intestine
how does the lymphatic system affect the liver
it transports fats to the liver indirectly
what are the functions of the liver? (4)
Absorbed
stored
broken down
detoxified
explain the absorption of food in liver
Food is absorbed and then released into the blood stream.
the liver regulates amount of nutrients entering circulatory system
explain the storing of food in the liver
when food is stored, glucose is converted into glycogen (glucose metabolism). the liver is responsible for regulating blood sugar levels.
The body cant store what so what does it do to it?
since the human body cannot store proteins, the liver converts any extra amino acids into fats or carbs.
this process starts with deamination which is the removal of nitrogen-containing amino group from amino acids
what do enzymes in the liver do to amino acids
the enzymes break down amino acids into glucose and ammonia. (ammonia is excreted via kidneys as urea)
what is meant by detoxified
this is when harmful substances such as alcohol, drugs and hormones are metabolized in the liver
