Gaseous exchange around the body - Unit 4 Flashcards
is gaseous exchange an active or passive process
passive
capillaries vs veins and arteries
capillaries are tiny blood vessels that are wrapped around the alveoli
arteries and veins are connected by capilarries
two things that happen as air enters lungs
oxygen enters air sacs which diffuses into capillaries
CO2 diffuses out of capillaries into air sacs
4 adaptations of alveoli
alveoli one cell layer thickkkk and the capillaries are one cell layer thick so diffusion can take place easy and fast
haemoglobin
iron containing pigment in red blood cells which transports oxygen
oxyhaemoglobin
haemoglobin that has combined with oxygen
1 haemoglobin molecule can carry how many oxygen molecules
at most 4
1 minus the P(1 - x>4)
is CO2 or oxygen more soluble in blood
CO2 and thus can easily lower the pH level by forming carbonic acid
besides from cheing oxygen a lift, what does haemoglobin act as
a buffer, it prevents blood from being too acidic
