goal: to use best practices to improve patient outcomes, promote healthy communities and populations and achieve a cost effective health care system

- includes the incorporation of cultural and societal factors and influences
ex: working with indigenous patients, examine and incorporate indigenous ways of knowing into patient’s plan of care
19th century
- nursing became a formal discipline
- Florence Nightingale published Notes on Nursing: a systematic collection and exploration of data which helped to support health promotion and nursing care
- schools of nursing were developed
- the first school of nursing in Canada was established at the general and Marine hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1874
- by 1930, there were 218 nurse training schools operating out of Canada’s 886 established hospitals
20th century
1900-1940: emphasis was on preparing nurses for practice. Apprenticeship programs based in hospitals
1950’s nursing began to change
- 1959: first masters nursing program - western Ontario
- 1969-70: nursing papers published at mcgill university. sharing of nursing research
- 1971: McGill launches centre for nursing research
- 1982: working group on nursing research established
- 1991: first Ph.D. programs in Canada launched
- 1999: nursing research fund launched with $25 million grant to be given out over 10 years
21st century
2004: forum on doctoral nursing education held in Toronto
2007: nursing research in Canada – status report published
2003-2013: 10 PhD. programs developed and started across canada
