Rogers Flashcards
phenomenology
individual’s unique way of experiencing the world - everyone has one and it is different –> must see the world through client’s eyes or perspective
client-centered approach
active listening
basic technique involving repeating back to client what client has said –> using client’s language to respond to the client, putting an emphasis on feeling words
-allows client to disagree with your interpretation and correct any misunderstandings
-communciates understanding of client’s struggles
-can reflect and intensify feelings, getting client to go deeper
self-concept
the way that we see ourselves; the idea we have about who we are as a person
-habitual way of thinking about ourselves
-health = self-acceptance (must have received unconditional positive regard to achieve this)
organismic valuing process (OVP)
Innate subjective capacity to know whether something aids self-actualization –> we are naturally drawn towards the things that aid self-actualization
-similar to empirical law of effect, but has nothing to do with reinforcement
self-actualization
instinct/innate motivation to fulfill one’s potential
-similar to Adler’s struggle for superiority
conditions of worth
must do something or be a certain way to earn something
e.g., parents say they will love you if you take out the trash
