May Flashcards
Existential psychology/therapy
thrownness
the arbitrariness of life that is a basic human experience; we are placed in circumstances that we did not choose and cannot control
umwelt
the world around us, both the biological world and the physical environment, including our bodies
–becoming too focused on this –> materialistic, consumeristic
mitwelt
“with” world, the world of other ppl; the social world
–becoming too focused on this –> conformity, being taken advantage of by others
eigenwelt
“own” world; the world where you relate to yourself and your existence/being
pathology
repression of awareness of reality (i.e., nonbeing) to protect oneself; afraid of making a choice, so avoid it
existential therapy
-opposed to rigid technique due to phenomenological approach –> must vary method from client to client
-focus on relationship bn th + clt (genuine, nondirective, avoid analyzing)
-th like a guide/serves as midwife (help clt give birth to life they want to experience)
existential therapy goals
reduce people’s reliance on repression
–>confronting non-being is uncomf, but will heighten awareness of self/being –> can become complacent if don’t think about death & wont make most out of time you have
–>enable ppl to be fully themselves and to face reality without repression/to experience life in moment
