Perls Flashcards
Gestalt psychology/therapy
gestalt
a whole structure – integrated, organized; Essential property of wholeness – more than sum of parts
figure
what stands out – most prominent, salient; What you pay attention to at this moment – tiny fraction of whole
ground
background – everything else that is not figure
Gestalt view of pathology
when the flow between figure and ground is somehow interrupted
-don’t express need due to fear of expression
-fixation on particular need
-trying to satisfy 2 needs at a time
-sticking to old figure-ground relationships
retroflexion
use body to inhibit need; lock feelings up –> physical symptoms distract from feelings you have
projection
don’t see need in self, see needs in others –> Focusing on how the other person has that feeling enables you not to have to see the feeling in yourself and that is how it protects you
introjection
“swallowing something whole”; conforming to other’s standards rather than own needs
desensitization
shut off feelin in part of body
e.g., ignoring feeling of others’ bodies in crowded train
rolfing
very deep, painful massage, focus on knots in muscles that are unmet needs blocked off from awareness that become stuck in the body –> emotional release, feelings/memories come into awareness
therapeutic goal for gestalt therapy
-(full) awareness of one’s needs, stop blocking of awareness
-reintegrate body and mind
