Rocks Quiz Flashcards
Igneous
Fire formed by cooling lava or magma
Sedimentary
Made from layers of squished-together dirt and old bits of rocks of sediment
Metamorphic
A large rock formed by heat and pressure beneath earth’s surface
Fine Texture
Very small minerals that look like speckles
Course texture
Mineral grains that are large enough to be seen
Porphyry
A combination of large and small grains
Cementation
The process of water carrying natural cements like silica coats sediments, and binds them together
Clastic
Sediments made of fragments of other old rocks and minerals
Chemical sedimentary
Formed when minerals form water stick together and harden.
Organic Sedimentary
Organic sedimentary rock is made from dead plants and animals squished together
Conglomerate
Large rounded stores cemended together
Breccias of sand
A large sharp - edged fragment cemended together
Sandstone
A small grains of sand cemented together
Foliated
The rock has layers
Explain the rock cycle
- Magma cools and solidifies to form igneous rock.
- Igneous rock breaks down into sediments.
- Sediments compact and cement together to form sedimentary rock.
- Sedimentary rock gets heated and pressed to form metamorphic rock.
- Metamorphic rock melts back into magma.
