Rock Types Flashcards
Differential erosion
Different rates of erosion
Igneous rock
Crystalline (Crystal interlock) - no pore spaces (less infiltration + less erosion)
Pervious - water can pass through if there’s cracks
Sedimentary rock
Clastic (particles compressed together)
Porous - since water can infiltrate into pore spaces
Dependent on age
Sedimentary - older means more compressed (more resistant and less porous)
Igneous - older means more cracks (more pervious)
Permeability
Groundwater weakens rocks by exploiting joints/faults
Less stability
Unconsolidated material
Material that is not together (loose)
Weakest and most easily eroded
North Antrim Coast, NI
History
Volcanism - igneous rock
Preserved soft sedimentary rock under shallow ocean
Covered by ice sheet during Quarternary
North Antrim Coast, NI
Resistant since mostly igneous bedrock
Resistant to erosive forces - (e.g: Portrush Headland)
High energy env since exposed to Atlantic
