RNAV Flashcards
What is RNAV
Any navigation system that permits point to point navigation with no requirement to fly over a ground based station.
Today it’s almost always GPS, but other systems exist.
How did we get the RNAV abbreviation?
aRea NAVigation
GNSS
Global Navigation Satellite System
GPS
Global Navigation System operated by the US Air Force
GLONASS
A Russian GNSS system similar to GPS
GPS is approved worldwide for
En route navigation, terminal procedures including arrivals (STARs), departures (SIDs), and Approaches.
How many GPS satellites are typically in orbit? How many constitute a “Full Deck”?
Usually 32 and 24 constitutes a full deck.
How many satellites does GPS need to see in order to produce a three-dimensional position?
At least 4
How is GPS augmented?
WAAS and LAAS
WAAS
Wide Area Augmentation System
LAAS
Local Area Augmentation System
What are the two categories of GPS augmentation systems?
SBAS and GBAS
SBAS
Satellite based augmentation system
GBAS
Ground-based augmentation system
Where are WAAS stations located?
On the ground, but it’s considered a Satellite Based Augmentation System
What is is the published accuracy of WAAS?
Three metres
WAAS is only available in
North America
New ICAO name for LAAS
GBAS - Ground Based Augmentation System
How does GBAS work?
Depends on a VHF data link to provide ultra-precise correction to aircraft
Not yet deployed in Canada
CDFA
Continuous Descent Final Approach
(Or Constant Descent Final Approach)
Continuous Descent Final Approach
A technique consistent with stabilized approach procedures for flying the final approach segment of a non-precision instrument approach without level offs to appoint approximately 50 feet above the landing runway threshold
RAIM
Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring
