RNA Modification and Transcription Flashcards
What occurs during RNA splicing?
Introns are removed, exons are connected (spliced), mature mRNA is exported to the cytoplasm
What does splicing require?
Spliceosome
What does splicing involve?
Removal of intron RNA, linkage of the exon RNA by a phosphodiester bond
What occurs during capping?
Removal of a phosphate group, attachment of GMP, attachment of meth
What does capping play a role in?
Movement of some RNAs into the cytoplasm, early stages of translation, splicing of introns
What is a PolyA tail?
A string adenine nucleotides at the 3’ ends of mature mRNA
WHat is transcription?
DNA to RNA
What is the organization of a bacterial gene before transcription?
Regulatory sequence, promoter, transcribed region, terminator
What does transcription produce?
mRNA
What is the organization of the mRNA transcript?
Ribosome binding site, start codon, many codons, stop codon
What are the two types of regulatory elements?
Enhancers and SIlencers (these are sequences)
What are some examples of cis acting elements
TATA Box, enhancers and silencers
What are examples of trans-acting elements?
Regulatory proteins that bind to DNA sequences, Transcription fcators
