Gene Regulation in Euks Flashcards
Transcription Factors?
Proteins that influence the ability of RNA polymerase to transcribe a given gene
What are the two main types of transcription factors?
General transcription factors and Regulatory Transcription factors
What are the General Transcription factors? What is their role in gene regulation?
TFIID,B,F,E,H; They are required for the binding of the RNA pol to the core promoter
What are the two conformations of chromatin?
Heterochromatin and Euchromatin
What effect so methylation have on chromatin?
It causes the chromatin to adopt the heterochromatin formation which leads to silenced gene expression
What does acetylation result in?
More open chromatin (Euchromatin)
What are the three ways chromatins remodel?
- Change in nucleosome position 2. Histone enivction 3. Replacement with histone variants
How is Ferritin (iron storage) mRNA translated?
When iron is low, translation does not occur. When iron is high, iron binds directly to the IRP and prevents it from binding to the IRE which allows translation to occur
How is Transferrin (iron transport) regulated?
When iron is high, translation does not occur. Iron binfs to IRP which causes it to dissociate from the IRE. When iron is low, translation occurs
For transferrin, what happens when Iron binds to IRP?
IRP dissociates from the IRE which causes mRNA to be degraded by an endonuclease. Removing the polyA tail
For ferritin, what happen when the IRP binds to the IRE?
It prevents the translation of the ferritin mRNA.
