RNA Flashcards
What is RNA?
It is nucleotides based on ribose.
What does RNA stand for?
Ribonucleic acid
What are the bases in RNA?
Adenine
Guanine
Cytosine
Uracil
What is transcription?
When RNA forms a replica of one of the DNA strands in the nucleus.
What is translation?
When the codons in the m-RNA codes for amino acids inside the ribosomes. It is also known as protein synthesis.
What types of RNA is there?
n-RNA
m-RNA
r-RNA
t-RNA
What is m-RNA?
Messenger RNA is used to bring the genetic information from the DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes. It transcripts the DNA in the nucleus, moves out through small pores in the nucleus membrane and is translated in the ribosomes where the codons code for amino acids.
What is t-RNA?
Transfer RNA carries one amino acid and fits with the correct codons in an m-RNA during translation in the ribosomes. They are the physical link between the nucleic acids and the amino acid chain during protein synthesis.
What is r-RNA?
Ribosomal RNA is found inside the ribosomes and exists in two subunits. A larger and a smaller one. It is used as a catalyst during translation and m-RNA is sandwiched between the two subunits. r-RNA exists in all forms of living organisms.
What is n-RNA?
Nuclear RNA exists in the nucleus and its main function is to help create pre messenger RNA.
