Prokaryotes Flashcards
What is endoplasm?
It is a cellular fluid.
What distinguishes a prokaryote?
They do not have a proper nucleus, only circular DNA.
What is the endosymbiotic theory?
It explains how prokaryotes became eukaryotes. A purple bacteria was living inside a bigger prokaryote. They were living in symbiosis. A cell membrane was eventually developed around these organisms and they became one cell. A nucleus was later developed around the DNA of the cell to protect it. The purple bacteria became the mitochondrion. In plant cells, a Cyanobacteria went through the process as well and became the chloroplasts. This explains why mitochondria and chloroplasts have their own DNA.
What are archea?
They are extremophiles, prokaryotes. They can live in any environment and only need water to survive. They are believed to be the origin of life.
What are bacteria?
They are prokaryotes, and their own kingdom. Unicellular organisms.
What kingdom has plasmids?
Bacteria
What are plasmids?
They are what bacteria uses instead of sexual reproduction. They cause the DNA to be mixed with other bacteria so that their is a variety within the species.
What organelles does a bacteria have
Cell wall. Flagellum
Cell membrane. Cytoplasm
Ribosomes
Loose circular DNA
What does an organism need to be classified as living?
An outer boundary
An energy source that they can transform to chemical energy
Access to C, O, H2O, P, N, H and S
Be able to replicate itself
What is the largest compound in a prokaryote?
Water inside the cytoplasm.
How is bacteria named?
After their shape, the disease they cause and how they replicate themselves.
Which are the seven life processes?
Respiration. Reproduction
Growth Movement
Feeding. Excretion
