DNA Flashcards
What does DNA look like in prokaryotes?
It is double stranded and circular.
What does DNA look like in eukaryotes?
Like a double stranded helix.
What are chromosomes?
They are a single piece of coiled DNA. Every chromosome contain thousands of genes.
What are genes?
They are situated in the chromosomes and code for traits and amino acids in triplets. The genes that code for amino acids are called codons.
What are are nucleotides?
They consist of a base, a deoxyribose or ribose and a phosphate group. This is what makes up the DNA and RNA.
What bases are there in DNA?
Adenine
Thymine
Guanine
Cytosine
What is replication?
It is the DNA copying itself before cell division. The helix is opened up and a two strands move into the middle. The bases are matched with their base pairs and eventually the two strands move apart, forming two double stranded DNA.
How many chromosomes does a human have?
46, 23 pairs.
