RNA Flashcards
what are defined as purines or pryimidine and what goes with what
a purine always matches with a pyrimidine
purine = A+G
pyrimidine = C+T+U (don’t want to get CUT by a pyramid)
three differences with RNA vs. DNA
- single stranded
2.the sugar has two OH (not only one) (doesn’t have a H) - Instead of A + T. A +U
mRNA
messenger
it is the message that tells your body to do something
ex. recipe for cookies - tells you what sugar amounts ex. are needed
ex. tells your body to make more height (a message)
ex. tells your body to make more fingernail
rRNA
reads + makes the proteins
- reads the message from mRNA
- it is made up of ribosomes
tRNA
transfer something (each tRNA only does one job
- transferring amino acids to make proteins (grabs 1 amino acid at a time0
ex. lock + key
non gentenic ex of all the three types of RNA
ex. got the message in the cook book (mRNA) to make cookies - I am reading it (rRNA) - every time I need chocolate chips my mom brings me some and every time I need sugar my dad brings me some (tRNA)
steps for RNA transcription
1.DNA helicase (opens up the spot in the dna that you need)
2. RNA polymerase(read 3’-5’)
3. DNA closes
4. message falls off
why is there no primase - because we want the RNA to fall off
- why is there no ligase = bc the message that RNA makes are all made and read a little differently so there is no ligase to fill in holes
how does the rRNA know when to start or stop
the message says it so only start when it says start and if it says stop don’t listen do anything after the stop unless it says start again
template vs. non template
template = make the message based off the dna template
non template = should look like the new message
what hapens when you change the shape of something
it changes its function
ex. change shape of a soccer ball and it’s function in a soccer game is not the same as it was
wobble hypothesis
hypothesis that if you cahnge the 3rd base of an amino acid condon the protein statys the same
(neutral mutation - the mutation isn’t good nor bad)
