RM L8: Data analysis - Flashcards
1
Q
What is the mean?
Lesson 8
A
- Usually called the average
1. Add up all scores
2. Divide by total number of scores - Test scores, temperature, height, age, weight
2
Q
What is 1 strength of mean?
Lesson 8
A
- Uses all the numbers in set
3
Q
What are 2 weaknesses of mean?
Lesson 8
A
- Outliers / data outside of data set can skew the results
- Affected by extreme values (couple of very high scores can skew mean so the average is higher than what most of the scores actually are
4
Q
What is the median?
Lesson 8
A
- The middlemost score
1. Rank data from S - L
2. Cross out from both sides
3. Find the middle number
4. If 2 numbers as middle add them and divide by 2 - Top 5 olympic medals, likert type questions
5
Q
What is 1 strength of using median?
Lesson 8
A
- Gets rid of outliers or very high / low scores
6
Q
What is 1 weakness of using median?
A
- As we are crossing out numbers may not represent full set of numbers
7
Q
What is the mode?
Lesson 8
A
- Most popular score
- Most popular dress size
8
Q
What is 1 strength of mode?
Lesson 8
A
- Less influenced by outliers and represents what is typical for given group
9
Q
What is 1 weakness of mode?
Lesson 8
A
- Not very useful where no number occurs more than once
10
Q
What is nominal data?
Lesson 8
A
- categories of data
- Favourite subject: english, maths, science
- MODE
11
Q
What is ordinal data?
A
- Numerical data on scale by researcher
- Happiness index
- MEDIAN
12
Q
What is interval / ratio data?
A
- Numerical data on universal data
- Height , weight
- MEAN
