RM L6: Sampling techniques - Flashcards
1
Q
Define ‘population’
Lesson 6
A
- An entire group with specific charecterisitics
- The target group / population is the desired population to be studied and wanted research findings to generalise to
2
Q
Define ‘sample’
Lesson 6
A
- The specific group from that population that the researcher will collect data from
3
Q
What is opportunity sampling?
Lesson 6
A
- Researcher selects ppts who are readily available
- In the right place at the right time
4
Q
What is the 1 strength of oppurtunity sampling?
Lesson 6
A
- Large no. of ppts can be recruited quickly and easily bcoz we using ppl who already there at time of study
5
Q
What are the 2 weaknesses of opportunity sampling?
Lesson 6
A
- Unlikely to have a wide variety of ppts as if all ppts in the same place we are recruiting similar people
- Findings are less generalisable as we don’t have a wide variety of ppts
6
Q
What is random sampling?
Lesson 6
A
- Every personn in target population has equal chance of being selected
- Randomly picking ppts to be in study
- Collecting names of all ppts from target population and then using name generator
7
Q
What is 1 strength of random sampling?
Lesson 6
A
- Researcher can generalise to population with more confidence as sample is more likely to be representative of target population
8
Q
What are the 3 weaknesses of random sampling?
Lesson 6
A
- Cannot guarantee representative sample as could be all females
- Getting details of target population and drawing a sample is hard / time consuming process
- Ppts can withdraw then we have to pick another ppt randomly
9
Q
What is volunteer (self selecting) sampling?
Lesson 6
A
- When ppts put themselves forward to take part in study
- Advertise thru social media, posters, newspapers, radio
10
Q
What is 1 strength of volunteer sampling?
Lesson 6
A
- Ppts are more likely to participate if already volunteered so they dropout rate will be lower
11
Q
What are the 2 weaknesses of volunteer sampling?
A
- Researcher is unlikely to gain wide variety of ppts which mean results will be less generalisable
- Group will consist only of ppl who volunteer to be part of study
