Q

What is correlation research?

Lesson 11

A
  • Investigates relationships between variables without the researcher controlling / manipulating them

Q

What is a correlational study?

Lesson 11

A
  • Non experimental
  • Because unlike in an experiment a correlation study does not tell us about causal relationships

Q

What is correlation?

Lesson 11

A
  • Checks to see if 2 sets of numbers / variables are related
  • Are the 2 variables related?
  • The numbers being analysed are behaviours / variables that could affect behaviour that produces quantitative data to establish whether correlation exists
  • The relationships between 2 measured variables
  • Correlation is not causation
  • Variables in correlation studies are called co-variables

Q

What is positive correlation?

Lesson 11

A
  • When one variable increases and second variable also increases
  • As one variable increases so does the other
  • Height and shoe size increasing

Q

What is negative correlation?

Lesson 11

A
  • When one variable increases and the second variable decreases
  • As one variable increases the other one decreases
  • Height above sea level and decrease in temperature

Q

What is no correlation?

Lesson 11

A
  • No definitive trend
  • 2 variables do not appear to be related
  • No linear pattern between variables
  • Head size and test scores

Q

What is a correlation co - efficient?

Lesson 11

A
  • Statistical method for assesing the strength of a correlation
  • The sign (+ or -) tells you the direction of the correlation
  • The number between (0-1) tells you the strength
  • Tells us if strong positive / weak positive

Q

What is the difference between an experiment and correlation?

Lesson 11

A

Experiment:
- Looking for a difference
- Looking for cause and effect relationship between IV and DV
- Has groups / conditions
- Displayed on bar charts / histograms

Correlation:
- Looking for relationship between 2 variables
- No IV / DV only co-variables
- No groups
- Displayed on scattergrams (scattergraphs)
