RM- cultural influences on individual attitudes, identity and behaviors

A

ISSUE: WHen investigating the cultural influences on indv attitudes, we often have to look at indviduals or groups from different cultures. As culture and how this affects our behavior is very complex, this makes it very hard to find the different factors that can affect our behavior. But, because its all about the study of culture, we need to have studies that reflect real life situations. Thats why both experiments and questionnaires/ case studies are v important
Questionnaires
Kim et al
GOOD
Quantitative data, provide objective scientific support for theories
Some behaviour hard to observe in real life or replicate in experiment, can use questionnaires to ask how they would act in real life - more valid than controlled environment in lab
Important for cultural influences on indv attitudes bc it is reflective of a person’s experiences/ real life
Easy to answer, send out to many people to make results generalisable to cultures
Easy to analyze - harder to interpret behaviour in real life
BAD
reliant on self report data
Not in depth - no space to say personal views not asked on questions

Case Study
Money
STRENGTH:
Very in depth and detailed
In the case of cultural influences on indv attitudes, this is a v complex situation, and so needs a detailed study
Allow us to gain a better understanding of what makes a certain indv unique.
The study MOney did was due to an accident, not a common occurence. There would not have been enough ppt for a diff type of study
LIMITATION
As it is a very in depth and detailed study, findings are not generalisable to toehr people
Findings about the role (or lack of role, in the case of Money) of cultural influences on indv attitudes and behaviors may not necessarily be true for other individuals, as the sample size was only on Brenda/ David
If we were to investigate the brain and how it affects behavior, a larger sample size would be needed

Experiment/ Natural experiment
Williams
GOOD
Ecologically valid, important bc cultural influences is v much based on people’s experience
Cant artifically create a cultural influence

BAD
Lots of extraneous variables u cant control
Culture is already v complex, cant be sure of the factors that affect the DV
