ETHICS- the indv and the group

A

Issue- When investigating the individual and the group, we are often focusing on individuals and their behaviors. As such, it is very important to take ethical measures, as there is typically a strong study of people.

Informed consent
must respect privacy and psychological well being of ppt
unless they give consent, observational research only ok in situations where u would expect to be observed
Cialdini
Observed ppl without their consent
But studies based on observation wtihout consent, they can only be taken place in places where u expect to be observed/ seen by strangers
SO, they were ethical

METHODS + ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
In the individual in the group, we used OBSERVATION to study, and this could affect INFORMED CONSENT. We do observation so that we can see ppl in their natural environment/ behvaior and how they act when put in groups
If the ppt were given informed consent, they could know objective of the study, and could change their behavior. Would lower the ecological validity of study

Bandura- protection of participants (could encourage aggression)
protection from physical and mental harm
shouldnt be greater than orfinary life
there should be greater caution when researching kids, and they should be careful when discussing results w parents, teachers
As they are studying aggression, the DV was whether or not kids imitated aggression as a result of SLT. if they did learn it, it would mean kids became more aggressive as a result of the study
They should follow up on kids to make sure there wasnt lasting effects
In the indv and group, we often study how people learn behaviors. As such, if the study was on how ppl learn aggression, it was not possible to study this without exposing ppt to aggressive behaviors

Charlton- privacy and confidentiality
researchs shouldnt reveal info that could draw attention/ reveal who ppt are. info such as name or address should be changed. they shouldnt be identifiable.
if this cant be guaranteed, then ppt must be warned of this in advance
Important as name of the island was revealed. They were identifiable
People could have been worried this would ruin rep of island, and so controlled behavior of kids - could have led to ppl being depressed, AND it influenced the results of the study
Kids were heavily observed, could have felt discomfort
In indv and group, as we are observing ppt, often studies are v in depth, and lead to the breaching of ppt’s privacy. U can only research behavior naturally if u are observing it, as questionnaires/ interviews could lead to self report, and so researchers might end up spending long time observing, and breach privacy

Ethics issue: lack of privacy
HOWEVER, they did get permission to watch the children
Argument that for children, they might not have been able to get informed consent
Especially importnat to get privacy, as its a small island, ppl might know each other and identify children
Social implications- responsibility as researcher that the study published doesnt make the town look bad
