Culture: shares the same values and beliefs, makes it easier to get alone to work together
Beliefs, attitudes, customs, values, superstitions, stereotypes, norms, traditions, fashions
A set of attitudes, behaviours and symbols shared by a large group of people and usually communicated from one generation to the next
A unique meaning and information system, shared by a group and transmitted across generations, that allows the group to meet basic needs of survival, pursue happiness and well-being, and derive meaning from life

Ppt were employees at International Business machines (IBMs)
He collected data from workers in over 40 countries. Questionnaires distributed to workers in different countries
Questionnaire had approx 160 items, 60 ish were abt work values
Q’s around 4 themes: satisfaction, perception, personal goals and beliefs, demographics.
Based on data collected, he identified 4 major dimensions of work-related values and made overall scores for each country according to score on dimension
The dimensions:
Power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, masculinity
Individualism Collectivism (IC)- v important in relation to work organisations. Collectivist groups foster more compliance with work policy, conformity, and fosters a greater degree of reliance on groupwork. Harmony within groups is valued more. Individualist groups value freedom and are more likely to challenge and take initiative in their jobs. IC differences produce clear consequences for structure and work Orgs in individualist cultures not expected to look after employees over lifespan. Collectivist groups expected to, and are responsible for their welfare.
Method- lots of data- More generalisability. Anonymous- more honesty. Standardised- less external factors. Quantitative- less interpretation.
Not qualitative- less in depth. People can interpret questions their own way- may affect responses. Results they get back will be a product of a questionnaire.
