River Landscapes Flashcards
how do you read a flood hydrography
Peak discharge- highest discharge in the period
Lag time- the delay <> peak rainfall and peak discharge
Rising limb- the increase in river discharge as rainfall flows into the river
Falling limb- the decreas in river discharge as river returns to normal level
what are the human causes of increasing the risk of flooding
Deforestation- will give a faster surface runoff
Urbanisation- The concrete pathings will stop the water from being able to be soaked up into the soil(less infiltration).
what are the physical causes of increasing the risk of flooding
- Heavy rainfall - increases the discharge quickly
- Relief( how the height of land changes) - if it is a steep-sided valley the water will flow faster and increase discharge
What is a drainage basin
The area of land drained by a river and its tributes
How does the cross profile of a river change downstream
- larger amount of water
- wider and deeper-tributaries add more water, it erodes channel
How does the long profile of a river change downstream
- steep in uplands
- gentle in lowlands
