2Urban Issues Flashcards
How is a mega citie defined
an urban area with a total population in excess of 10 million people
How is the worlds population changing
- over half the worlds population now live in cities
- by 2030 60%
- by 2050 70%
What is urbanisation
The process by which an increase in percentage of countries population come to live in towns and cities
How does urbanisation vary between LICs, and NEEs and HICs
LICs- high as maj still in rural
NEEs- high as maj still in rural younger = fast
HICs- low as maj already live in urban (1800) ageing = slow
What is that increase and how does it impact urbanisation
The birthrate minus the death rate of a population where birthrate is higher than Death rate
More people born then dying so population grows and more young people live in cities to find work and have children which increases the proportion of the population in urban. Better healthcare in urban means people live longer increasing proportion of people in Urban
What is migration and how does it impact urbanisation
Movement of people from One area to another. It increases urbanisation as more people move from rural to irban increasing the rate of organisation
How does lees push pull theory link to urbanisation
Where are push factors which make someone want to leave the rural area and pull factors making people want to go to an urban area causing The percentage of a country’s population in towns and cities
What’s the difference between a slow growing, growing and rapidly growing megacities and examples
Slow-growing -70%+ urban and no squatter settlements
Eg. Tokyo
Growing- 40-50% urban and 20% squatter settlements
Eg. Beijing
Fast growing- <50% urban and 20%+ squatter settlements
Eg. Lagos
