Risk Scores-FRAX Flashcards
What is the purpose of FRAX score?
A risk assessment tool for estimating 10-yr risk of osteoporotic fracture in untreated patients
What personal information would we need?
Age Sex weight height femoral neck BMD (bone mineral density)
What past medical history would we need?
Rheumatoid arthritis
Secondary osteoporosis (caused by medical condition or treatment)
what medical conditions can cause secondary osteoporosis?
kidney failure Cushings(a tumour of the pituitary gland) Coeliac MS hyperparathyroidism Hyperthyroidism Diabetes
Previous fracture
What drug history would we want?
glucocorticoids
lithium
barbiturates (central nervous depressants)
What family history to ask?
parental fracture hips
What social history to ask?
smoking
drinking (>3 units)
What is T-score?
how much your bone density is higher or lower than that of a healthy 30 year old adult
Given a T-core value what do they mean?
-1 and above: normal bone density (don’t need osteoporosis medications)
between -1 and -2.5: osteopenia, should consider medication when they have certain risks
-2.5 and below: osteoporosis, should consider taking osteoporosis medicine–> bisphosphonates
What is a Z-score?
it compares the condition of your bone with someone of your age, sex, weight ethnic orgin
